Royals net seven against Lynwood in pre-season friendly
May 15, 2007

Ottawa Royals continued its pre-season program with a comfortable 7-1 victory over MC1 team Lynwood at Valleystream Park, Tuesday.

On a treacherous pitch and under the constant threat of thunderstorms, the Royals came to terms best with the conditions and controlled the majority of the match.

Coach Michael Adams gave debuts to goalkeeper Frank Dicaria and right midfielder Jonathan Brooks and will have been happy with both performances.

Ottawa opened the scoring on 12 minutes as a result of a well-worked set piece. Frank Zegers met Alan Farant’s inswinging corner and hit a rasping volley into the corner of the net.

Four minutes later, the Royals had doubled the score. Jeff Dennis fed the marauding Ryan Devereaux with a fine through ball and the Nova Scotian dispatched the ball comfortably past the advancing keeper.

On 24 minutes, the Royals were three up. Alan Farant’s corners had been a consistent problem to the home side and the pace of his delivery beat the keeper at his near post.

The Royals took their foot off the gas at this time and resorted to individual play rather than working as a unit. Shoddy work in midfield allowed Lynwood with a couple of chances and Dicaria was relieved to see the ball come off the crossbar on two occasions.

The Royals still maintained the lion’s share of possession, but too often became bogged down in the middle or chose wrong options when attacking down the flanks. Defensively, Shales and MacMillan were strong in the centre of the four-man back line, while Zegers and Viscosi provided decent outlets.

At half time, Adams switched the team around, bringing on Wallace for Dicaria, Roberto Gutierrez for Shales, Boyle for Brooks, Labrom for Rochon, Jorge Gutierrez for Kowlessar and Ntwari for Dennis.

The changes seemed to have the desired effect and at the beginning of the half, the Royals tore into the Lynwood defence. The main surprise was that another goal did not arrive until the 62nd minute, and when it did arrive, it came from the unlikeliest of sources. Richard Boyle.

Jorge Gutierrez exploded through the middle of the park and fed an excellent pass out to Thierry Ntwari. Ntwari beat his defender before whipping in a superb centre from right, which Boyle converted with some aplomb.

On 76 minutes, Devereaux scored his second goal of the evening, picking up a loose ball and hammering it past the Lynwood keeper.

Ottawa began to turn the screw a little more and on 79 minutes, MacMillan hit the sixth goal of the evening for the visitors, after Devereaux and Ntwari had combined well on the right.

On 83 minutes, Ntwari finally got the goal his excellent performance deserved, outsprinting the defence from the half way line and toe-poking the ball under the advancing goalkeeper.

The Royals then completely switched off and when Roberto Gutierrez lost possession on the half-way line, it allowed the home side to score a consolation goal and ruined the Ottawa Royals shut-out.

Royals Premier Held by Club’s Solid MC4 Side
May 14, 2007

Ottawa Royals MP team was held to 1-1 tie by the club’s Ukrainia side last night in a 70-minute exhibition fixture at Gloucester Super Dome.

As part of the team’s pre-season preparations, a strong group of players put in a hardworking and solid showing, but failed to find the spark necessary in the offensive third to break down the resilient MC4 defence.

The Premier side controlled, as expected, the majority of the possession and during the first half created a wave of chances. Opting for a 4-5-1 system with Jeff Dennis as the lone striker, the first half saw Marc Labrom operating on the left flank and Richard Boyle on the right.

Steve Kowlessar opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a rasping drive into the top corner from 25 yards, following some good movement down the right flank.

The MP side circulated the ball extremely well, and for the first half pinned the MC4 team into the final third of the pitch. However, the lack of a cutting edge was apparent, as several clear-cut chances were missed and the wrong options were often chosen in and around the box. All too often, a lack of real urgency was being shown in important spaces – and this slowed down the attacking approach play and allowed time for the defence to recover.

Jeff Dennis put in a committed performance as the lone striker and will have benefited from the experience.

In the second half, the MP side continued to have the lion’s share of possession, but the gap between midfield and the forward line was still apparent. Seven minutes in, the team switched to a 3-5-2 formation and three minutes later conceded a goal. Sergey Kovalenkov took advantage of slack marking to blast the ball past Steve Paiano in the MP nets.

The premier side’s woes continued, as Peter Mapendere had to leave the game after receiving a kick to his right ankle. With no substitutes, the team played on with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Despite this, the Premier side dominated possession, yet never really looked as if it could punish the MC4 defence.

A disappointing result, but the number of clear chances created in the first half was pleasing – and the players involved will benefit enormously from the competitive workout.

Report: Fury U-17 0, Royals 2

Royals Outclass Fury Junior Side
May 6, 2007

Ottawa Royals continued its run of impressive pre-season showings with a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Ottawa Fury’s U-17 side in Kemptville yesterday.

In stifling conditions on a difficult and bumpy pitch, the Royals dominated their opponents from the start, rarely having to move out of second gear in the entire encounter.

Using a 3-5-2 formation, the Royals moved the ball about confidently, maintaining possession well and trying to use the width of the field to its advantage. Richard Boyle and Alan Farant provided good flank outlets, with Jeff Dennis and Ryan Devereaux moving well in attack. The Royals struggled to make their possession count though, despite several good chances falling to Devereaux (5th and 10th minute) and Dennis (16th minute), and need to be much more clinical in front of goal.

The Fury was unable to gain or keep possession for very long – and the Royals spent the first 45 minutes playing neat patterns and trying to release the front two or the wide men. The Fury packed its defence, playing two stoppers deep with a defensive midfielder sitting just in front of them. With such a deep line, the Royals tried to use the width – and when the passing was crisp and aggressive, it managed to unlock the home side’s defence consistently.

The Fury was becoming frustrated with the lack of possession and Alic Edgar was the victim of an appalling studs-up challenge on 30 minutes, which saw him being helped from the field and unable to take any further part in the game. He was replaced by Dan Deganutti and the back three was shuffled to accommodate the primarily left-sided player.

The Royals injected a little more urgency into the game and it almost brought quick results. On 35 minutes, Boyle hit a vicious strike from the right, which Fury keeper Heembrock did well to parry over. Four minutes later, following a Farant corner on the right, the ball fell for Dominic Rochon on the left-hand side of the penalty box. Checking inside, Rochon saw Heembrock off his line, but curled his shot just over the bar.

The best chance of the half came on 44 minutes, when Steve Kowlessar smashed a shot from 35 yards, which would have dipped under the bar had Heembrock not got a hand to it. Devereaux was following up at pace and reacted well to reach the bouncing ball and hit it on the half volley. Unfortunately for him, his shot skewed high over the bar.

At half time, the talk was of injecting more urgency into the game and of making the domination count. Michael Adams replaced a number of players, with Peter Mapendere coming on as a right midfielder, Ewan Lyttle replacing Steve Kowlessar and Marc Labrom taking Alan Morgan’s place. Thierry Ntwari also came on up front for Jeff Dennis.

The changes had the desired effect, as Ottawa’s movement was quicker and the passing crisper. Mapendere in particular showed a great appetite for the game, harrying and harassing his opposite number and charging forward at every opportunity. With the solidity afforded by an experienced and settled defence, well marshalled by goalkeeper Steve Paiano, the Royals consistently built from the back, with James MacMillan, Deganutti and Frank Zegers all providing good launching pads for the attacking play. On 58 minutes, Dimitri Koutras replaced Alan Farant on the left.

The Royals finally opened their account on 65 minutes, and it came following an excellent move on the right-hand side.

Peter Mapendere marauded down the flank, before combining well with Ryan Devereaux and Thierry Ntwari. The ball was played back out to Mapendere, who crossed for Dom Rochon at the far post. Rochon distanced himself from his defender before looping an excellent header over the stranded goalkeeper and off the opposite post.

Despite being a goal up, the Royals maintained possession and kept the home side penned into its own half. Probably as a result of its over-cautious approach, the Fury was unable to build anything and was restricted to trying to release their speedy striker with big hoofs from the back.

On 81 minutes, the Royals’ patience and diligence led to their second game. Rochon, who was much more convincing throughout the second half, dispossessed the Fury defenders as they were trying to clear their lines, blocking a clearance and outpacing Ryan Devereaux to the ball on the edge of the ‘D’. As the keeper raced out, Rochon chipped the ball deftly into the net to round off the scoring.

The Royals could – and probably should – have increased the score by the end, but was satisfied with a good work out and a comfortable win in difficult conditions.

Royals Man of the Match was James MacMillan, whose solidity and calmness at the back was the basis of many an attack and enabled the Royals to build with confidence. Peter Mapendere injected an extra spark into the proceedings when he came on, and Ewan Lyttle’s snarls and accomplished distribution anchored central midfield.

Royals suffer harsh defeat to Outremont in Montreal
April 28, 2007

Ottawa Royals went down to a controversial defeat against one of Quebec’s leading sides in the teams third pre-season friendly under the floodlights at CEPSUM, Montreal University, Saturday.

Beaten 2-1 in persistent rain, the Royals gave a good account of themselves, fighting hard in a chippy encounter that was not assisted by some appalling refereeing decisions.

Ottawa set out a 3-5-2 formation, with trialist Steve Paiano in nets, and a back three of Roberto Gutierrez, Alic Edgar and Frank Zegers.

Ottawa took time to settle to the requirements of the three-man back line, but the competitive nature of the team meant it was not overwhelmed by the speed and movement off the ball of Outremont.

Ottawa sat deep and hit the Quebec team on the counter, with Ryan Devereaux and Jeff Dennis combining well to create a couple of decent chances.

Defensively. Paiano showed well, and the more the team grew accustomed to playing a new role, the less Outremont threatened.

At half time, the game was still scoreless – and Ottawa looked the more likely team to open its account.

Instead, on 51 minutes, Outremont took the lead, thanks to a controversial penalty, which was awarded after the referee had played advantage to the visitors, following an awful foul on Gutierrez.

Ottawa continued to grow in stature and on 57 minutes, following a period of sustained pressure, scored a well-deserved equalizer through Dom Rochon.

Rochon was at the centre of an industrious and tenacious midfield, comprising him, James MacMillan and Steve Kowlessar, and had moved upfield to support an attack on the left flank, led by substitute Alan Farant and Ryan Devereaux. Ottawa set itself up for a number of shots, all of which were blocked, before the ball fell to Rochon on the edge of the area. Rochon turned inside before curling the ball expertly to the keeper’s right into the roof of the net.

Two minutes later, Outremont took the lead again. The midfield lost shape and focus and allowed a shot from 30 yards that floated and deceived Paiano.

Ottawa continued to press the home team back into its own half and dealt well with any counter attacks.

Compounding the penalty fiasco, the referee blew for full time seven minutes early, adding timekeeping to his impressing resume of incompetence.

Ottawa can be pleased with its outing. Despite its defeat, it answered numerous questions of character and fitness – and is setting itself up nicely for the 2007 season.

Royals brought back down to earth
April 18, 2007

After the euphoria of the 6-1 thumping of Red Star in Montreal on Sunday, Ottawa Royals came back to earth with a thud at Ottawa University campus last night, scraping past a committed Ottawa Internationals Reserve squad 2-1. Goals from former Internationals players Matt D’Angelo and Jeff Dennis were enough to win the game, while the MC1 team responded late in the match through Ed Tarpeh.

In a shortened fixture, the teams played two thirty-minute halves, with the Royals giving several trialists a run-out in a competitive game.

While rarely threatened, the Royals showed a distinct lack of composure on the ball and seemed to have little appetite for the midfield battle. Matt D’Angelo toiled away upfront, but received little in the way of support or service. The experimental defence was shapeless and seemed to ball-watch far too often; only Alan Morgan, fitting in on the left of the three-man unit, came out of the game with any credit.

On 21 minutes, D’Angelo opened the score for the visitors, taking advantage of a muddle in the defence to turn and bury the ball in the corner past a static Ibrahim in goal.

Sixty seconds later, Jeff Dennis was too slow to react, allowing a golden opportunity in the box to elude him. The Royals were controlling the game, but lacked the composure to kill off the game.

In the second half, the Royals were more focused and direct, and three minutes in Jeff Dennis had doubled the score. Matt D’Angelo showed great acceleration on the left, beating Cottrell for pace and crossing in low and hard to the penalty area. Dennis steered the ball into the net first time with good composure.

Minutes later, Dennis missed another sitter, bringing down another cross, but then blasting the ball high and wide with keeper on the ground and the net gaping.

Internationals reduced the deficit on 50 minutes after another defensive muddle. With Azerizghi appealing vainly for offside—and having committed the cardinal sin of stopping playing to do so—Tarpeh powered his way through the middle and buried the ball past McCallum.

Both sides fought hard for the remaining ten minutes, with neither team having the guile nor edge to score again.

Overall, a poor performance from the Royals, and the levels of focus and commitment will need to be stepped up if this season is to be a success.

Royals cruise to pre-season victory in Montreal
April 16, 2007

Ottawa Royals opened their pre-season with a resounding 6-1 victory over Montreal’s Red Star at Parc Dollard des Ormeaux yesterday. The scorers for the Royals were Viscosi, Rochon, Devereaux (2), MacMIllan and Dennis.

On a bitterly cold afternoon, Ottawa started brightly against their Quebec opposition, with the 3-5-2 formation allowing Rochon, Kowlessar and Morgan to combine well in midfield and release Boyle and Mapendere on the flanks.

Somewhat against the run of play, Red Star took the lead on 11 minutes. In a swirling wind, goalkeeper Tyler Wallace failed to clear his lines properly, shanking the ball straight at Dominic Rochon who was 10 yards out outside the box. Rochon was unable to control and lost the ball to a Red Star midfielder, who promptly controlled and lobbed the stranded Wallace from the edge of the area.

Ottawa continued to control the game and refused to panic. On 25 minutes, the quick passing game opened up Red Star’s defence once again. Peter Mapendere, playing on the left side of midfield, cut inside his defender and hit a rasping half volley from distance, which the keeper could only parry. The ball fell to Marc-Anthony Viscosi, who reacted first and finished coolly.

Four minutes later, the Royals were in front. Mapendere was again provider, his pass setting up Rochon, who curled the ball superbly over the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.

The Royals continued to make the difficult conditions work for them, playing the ball well along the ground and keeping their shape reasonably well.

In the second half, the Royals played with the wind and took control of the game. Ryan Devereaux was dangerous whenever he received the ball - and on 50 minutes, he scored his first goal for the club. Once again, the ball was worked well from midfield out to the left. Dan Deganutti, who had replaced Mapendere at half time, beat his man and put in a great cross from the left, which Devereaux met with his instep and guided into the bottom corner of the net.

Three minutes later, James MacMillan soared like a salmon to meet Deganutti’s corner from the right, angling his powerful header downwards past the stranded goalkeeper.

Ottawa was fully in control now and the back three of MacMillan, Azerizghi and Edgar were giving themselves time to spray the ball out well from the back. On 65 minutes, Jeff Dennis made a good run into the box and met Devereaux’s fine cross, controlling the ball into the left-hand corner of the net.

Ottawa finished its scoring on 71 minutes, when Devereaux scored his second goal with a deft header from an excellent Koutras cross from the right.

It was an encouraging performance from Ottawa – especially in the first half and early in the second, when the teamwork was very solid. With a few players playing out of position (Mapendere and Viscosi), the shape of the team became all-important.
